Welcome to all that is Jim Bultas

1/9/2009 Happy New Year and all that sweet, sweet jazz! It is a bonafide factoid that HP & RNRSP will be at Visioncon Saturday, January 24 at 5:27p.m. Both films will play back to back and the showing is free to those just coming for the screenings! There will be some maner of party later that night involving sci-fi/fantasy/gaming geeks + drinks + costumes = Fun,Fun, Fun, till your daddy took the t-bird away. Oh, and that's right sucka, 5:27p.m.
I've been writing songs for Bender with the assistance from the Red Arrow himself, Mike Oettle. So far we've got Bender (I don't know how I thought of this one), The Speed Of Lust, and Kiss The Fist. Perhaps one more and we'll have an EP on the way? Here's a lyrical sampling,"White lightening, steel thunder. You'd better run, you'd better duck and cover."

10/17/2008 Highway Pirates will be showing along with Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol at Visioncon January, 23rd - 25th 2009. I believe it will be Saturday, the 24th, early evening, showtime TBA. I will be there probably with some swashbuckling stars introducing the movie and selling DVDs.
HP also had a very well received premiere run at the Moxie. Now, before I go on I must say that I am very proud of the aforementioned swashbuckler. It's a very unique 39 minute short with some very decent blue screen effects. The editing is tight and the story is told almost exclusively through the action. The orchestral score is one of the best pieces of music I've ever written. I would gladly put it up with just about any hollywood film score. I'm not being cocky, it just kicks ass. Over the 8 months that followed, I entered HP into 6 or 7 different film festivals. Well, unfortunately it didn't get accepted into Sundance... or any of the others! Now Sundance is huge and being declined was expected but most of the others were not . So that was a downer. It seems that this futuristic pirate movie with little to no dialoge aside from yarring and centered around a lesbian love story didn't find it's target audience in the film fest commitees.
Troma loved it but they didn't have a time table for when they could release it and I just wanted to get it out there. Youtube wasn't an option since everything is so compressed and crappy sounding. I orginally wanted to get it up on itunes but I found something that's just as good. For just a mere $.99 you can own Highway Pirates and watch it on your computer, burn it to a DVD, or even watch it on your ipod! Check it out at Hungry Flix.
So what eles have I been doing? Well I've taken a much needed break from film production. When I started pre production on HP I was just premiering RNRSP through Troma so I didn't really have a breather there and let me tell you; making movies is quite exhausting. I've kicked around some ideas a few of which I'm I think would be really great. The single biggest hurdle is that I have little to no interest in going it alone again. By that I mean writing, directing, producing, filming, editing, post production, and composing. It's just too much. So when I find some brilliant and experienced people who are as passionate about doing the next one as I am we'll get to work. I also will require a decent budget. If either of those sounds like you and your interested let me know.
In the meantime I've been gigging again around Springfield and Branson in a cawk rawk cover band by the name of Bender; named after the futurama character and made up of some very close friends. I've also been hired to play guitar in various musicals. Playing out again has been all kinds of fun and rewarding as well as strangly theraputic. It's like hanging out again with a long lost friend.
So life has been good for me here in the Shire. Stormy, Drew, and I are happy and healthy. Fall is falling and we've been enjoying our fire pit in our backyard/forest in the middle of town.

4/18/2007 Wow, it's only been five months since my last posting. I finished Highway Pirates! Hurray! In fact it will be playing at the Moxie Cinema October 8th & 9th and perhaps some other time there soon. I don't have show times but I suggest you look at their calender to keep updated. I'm not so good at updating my sites. After I'm done entering HP in "a bunch" of festivals I'm going to have a break. Perhaps I'll update my site more often. Perhaps not. I guess you'll just have to check back everyday to see. Enjoy fall whereever you are! Here in Springfield, MO it's a wonderifus time of year. Have fun enjoying yourself!

4/20/2007 Yes it's 420 and instead of going to see a reggae or jam band I'm going to go home, eat meatloaf, and work on Highway Pirates; which is sure to be as mind altering an experience as one can hope for. My Highway Pirates update and musings are as follows.

1) Sweet Baby Jesus This Is A Ridicules Amount Of Work For A Short!

2) Don't make important decisions hopped up on caffeine.

3) The ruff edit was completed in February. I'm now waist deep in the FX shots. 260 at last count! This, once again, is all for a 35 minute short which are commonly known don't earn any money... honey. My fondest ambition for HP is to get funding for my third movie of which it's subject is so secret that I can only work on it using split personalities so that even I don't know entirely what it's about!

4) I completed all of Drivers shots first. Then it was on to the Fire and Ice Pirate who were chasing her. The Fire Pirates bluescreen shots were shot in the morning when the sun was behind a group of trees in my backyard so the screen reflected onto the actors and their silver shiny swords turning them blueish. I don't own enough lights to have lit the 16' by 16' bluescreen and I don't think my house could have handeled the power load anyway. Did I mention this is low budget.
Rotoscoping is used to make a traveling matte to tell the computer, "Don't turn this blue colored sword, which is being waved all over the place for this 5 second shot, transparent. There are 30 frames a second so I have to shape and alter the matte to follow the random trajectory of said sword. That's 150 frames and one sword out many of about 150 shots involving swords. You can do the math and begin to understand the mountain of work involved in this movie all being done by yours truly.

5) Today I made it to the fight scene which alone comprises 84 bluescreen shots. I'm so happy to discover that the fight scene was shot at the perfect time of day. When the sun wasn't shining directly on the bluecreen thus over exposing it or in shadow making the computer harder to distinguish the blue background from the actors or from Julies purple sash or Rob's blue shirt. Yes, that really happened. Instead it was over head and will make this mighty chunk of shots much easier to do than the preceding ones.

6)I'm still on target for finishing the FX shots by the end of April and then I'm on to theorchestral score and sound FX as well as the voice overs.

7) I've flirted with the idea of making this a silent movie since the get go but I'm leaning against it. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

8) If all goes well I will be entering this movie into some high profile film festivals. Might as well shoot for the moon!

9) The first trailer is done and up on the HP myspace site.

10) Bye bye.

1/31/2007 My town and surrounding areas were hit hard by the ice storms that rained down on us in January. Generally you were either without electricity for two days or two weeks. I was fortunate to be one of the former and have emerged from it unscathed with the exception of our beautiful trees. At least I can work a chainsaw really well. Can anyone say workshed? I just started back to work on Highway Pirates after a 3 month hiatus. In that time I played guitar in a musical. Rearranged a bluegrass tune into country and recorded it as duet with Julie Drake. Filmed a mini-documentary for a reality tv show and made a pod for the cable station Current on our ice storms and that made it on air. All of these things have paid so they take priority. I've been psyching myself up for this year and am feeling very good about it. We also just got a new dog in addition to Toa, the happy Collie greyhound mutt. New dog is named Nessy after the Loch Ness monster of course and she's very sweet. Unfortunately she has heartworms which explains her frequent naps. It will be expensive and difficult to eradicate. But that's alright, it's worth it. Happy belated New Year!

8/23/2006 This summer has flown by. Highway Pirates is now done with production as of last Sunday. The last day of shooting went out with a splash as Matt Myrick and I went down to Turner Bridge and filmed underwater footage for the secret ending to the film. I’m pleased to say the footage looks very good and I didn’t ruin the camera even though I was using a Zip-lock freezer bag to put it in. Kinda crazy but you do what you’ve got to do to get the job done on a no budget budget. Matt took some short clips of me in action running around with the camera underwater which I figure might make it to the DVD. This Saturday is the wrap party for the crew and it’s good to be done although I’ll miss working with such an enthusiastic bunch. Hopefully they’ll all be this fun in the future. In other news Chris Stewart’s Zombie Exterminators really is coming to a close so I’ll be starting on the music for that probably with in the next month. I’ve already done FX shots for his movie and finished a bunch of shots for Ross Payton’s Motor Home From Hell last July. Provided I get Highway Pirates completed by the end of the year that will be four movies for 2006 that I’ve worked on. Not bad for a guy who wears glasses.

7/25/2006 Highway Pirates is proceeding full steam ahead. Last night Nick and Joe came over to build a 16' by 16' giant square frame which I will attach several rows of blue plastic table cloth I bought from a party supply store thus making a freakin' large bluescreen. This Sunday we'll park cars in front of it to shoot the fighting scenes from the movie. It sure is nice to get something done that's not the last minute. Sunday before last we went out to Turner bridge which is about a mile stretch of closed off road outside of town, and filmed most of the driving scenes for the movie. I thought I had my shit really together and had completed a very detailed shot list of scenes I wanted to shoot that day. After I finished it I realized this is not going to work as it was 100 degrees and very humid; we were on blacktop next to a river. I had to run and gun, there was simply no other way. It was a grueling 8 hour day but I am very fotunate to be working with a great cast and crew who always seem to be in great spirits. No one seemed to regret being there. I'll have pics up of the shoots as soon as more important priorites are dealt with. Unfortunately Mike aka my assistant producer has jumped ship and left the movie taking a job working on the road. I've really missed his help since he talked me into doing this. We he get's back he'll spend 3 days in the brig. In other news I finished all the shots I was working on for Ross Payton's Motor Home From Hell and I think they're pretty damn good. That and I had my tripod stolen out of my car. I have hopes of recovering it since it really isn't functional in it's stolen shape and I think it has a serial number when they try and sell it.

7/10/2006 We had our first day of shooting for Highway Pirates yesterday at the auto salvage yard. Naturally this is the Highway Pirates pirate cove where they take the vehicles of their victims that they've stolen. I'm very happy with the dailies and inspite of my better judgement even started editing today. I stopped after a bit when I realized that this should be one of those days to just kick around since I’ll be spending the rest of my time dedicated to HP and the FX shots I’m working on for Ross Payton’s Motor Home From Hell. I got lot’s of coverage for the all important pirate captain arm wrestling match to cut it up nice and neat and splice in other shots of daily highway pirate life. Mike Oettle of RNRSP fame has been a huge help with ideas building and everything. His title now is Assistant Producer but I need a better one to encompass all that he’s done. The weather was really on our side; overcast so it didn’t get freakin’ hot. It just started to rain when we had wrapped for the day. Costumes and vehicles really came together and all the actors (Around 20 or so) kept in great spirits and the egos were almost nonexistent. This coming Sunday will probably be a bear. It will involve all driving with 3 vehicles on a closed off road just outside of town. Probably 2/3 of the script is driving so It will be a long day. I bought a Sticky Pod last week so I can get those on the side of the car, windshield, and low on the road shots. Preparation is key to getting the most out of everyone and everything so I’m really getting my shite together with a solid shot list and storyboarding. I’ll let you turkeys know how it goes. I'll also be adding pics from the shoots and a snappy logo when I get to it. Pizza Out!

6/19/2006 The Moxie shows went very well! We didn't sell out but we had a strong showing both nights. I was especially pleased with Wednesday. I don’t think I knew but a couple of people there, the rest were there just for great cinema... and what they got was RNRSP. The Borders signing was a bit of a hoot. They didn’t order any DVDs. Not a one. Not even just for the store. Anyone who knows me can tell you if I bribe them that I’m a patient person and I don’t use four letter words much like cake or gunz. That said I was a bit taken aback since here was my big signing and the paper and radio had been saying buy it at Borders and FYE. However, subconsciously on a multi-dimensional level I thought something like this might happen. Fortunately Troma had sent me 2 boxes of screeners since we thought one was lost in shipment and so I was able to have “product” there on hand. We didn’t sell much. I think it was 7. But a very friendly gal made a couple of ridicules announcements for us and we got free drinks that the fellas took advantage of and were promptly bouncing off the walls.

If you haven’t read the hip DVDtalk review you should do it now. I’ve been all buzzed from the positive vibes. I then went to Netflix to see what people had to say. 4 out of 4 reviews were one star out of a possible 5! They didn’t like it too much. I don’t mind as their major criticisms were that this wasn’t typical Troma, there was no T & A or gore and that the Alien and chick on the cover weren’t in the movie. All valid gripes which all I can say is, “Lasers man. Rock ‘n’ Roll lasers.”

In other news, I was going to take the rest of the summer easy and catch up on my slackin’ but Mike Oettle aka The Red Arrow talked me into doing a short I wrote a few months ago entitled Highway Pirates. It’s a bit of a Mad Max Road Warrior type thing but silly. I’m getting all professional and have “locations” that people have signed releases for. Then there’s a “shooting schedule” and then “weekly meetings”. Mike’s the assistant producer and I’ve got other folks working on costumes and vehicle designs. You can get a lot more done when you’re not doing it all yourself see. So if you’re a local yocal and have several Sundays free in July and would like to be a Scurvey Highway Pirate email me.

6/6/2006 Action Is Go! The DVD is now available for purchase! Hope to see you tonight and tomorrow at the Moxie! Rock!

6/3/2006 The movie has received a very hilarious and equally positive review from dvdtalk.com. 4 stars out of 5! Read it here.

6/1/2006 Yes, we are a mere 5 days from the DVD release and Moxie shows and things are coming together. Our local paper the Newsleader did a fine little write up in last Friday’s entertainment section and I just had an interview with E-Man from Q102 last night. I don’t think I sounded too much like an ass... yes! At last I’ve have secured my own copy of the movie and it looks good. All of the special features I delivered to Troma have been included! The DVD is truly packed and well worth $15. My version of this movie was easily a PG but I have come to find that the trailers included by Troma are definitely an R rating. No big surprise there. So after you’ve watched the movie and if you feel your blood and breasts fix was not met, just watch the trailers. See, now everybody is happy. Tally Ho!

5/11/2006 We are now less than a month away from the Galaxy Wide release of Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol. Myself, I'm couple of days away from having my hands on the finished product. Here's a list of events happening in my little town:

Tuesday, June 6th
Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol Galaxy Wide Release
available at Borders and online at amazon.com

Tuesday, June 6th at 7p.m.
The Moxie Cinema showing of the film followed by the Where Are They Now Featurette
and filmmaker/cast Q & A

Wednesday, June 7th at 9:30p.m.
The Moxie Cinema showing of the film followed by the Where Are They Now Featurette
and filmmaker/cast Q & A

Saturday, June 10th at 7p.m.
DVD signing at Borders Books and Music

4/7/2006 I've created a Myspace profile for RNRSP to help spread the word as well as one for myself. Won't you be a friend of Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol or my friend?
In other news Troma continues to have trouble with the DVD authoring house who is creating the RNRSP DVD which means work or more like scrambling for me.
It seems obvious to me that someone on "the inside" is trying to censor this movie at all costs! What they don't realize is you can't stop spaceships man! No one can and no one ever will!
Hopefully the last of these issues have been resolved and I will get my screener copy in a couple of weeks.

3/15/2006 Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol is now available for pre-order through amazon.com! The release date is still June 6th and it looks like all of the extras and easter eggs will be included. Now this may sound just totally out of place here but I think you should buy it now; if not for you than at least a copy for everyone else you know.

2/22/2006 Coming this June 6th, 2006, Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol will be released! It appears Troma will be using all the extras I sent which is great good fortune and tiddings of joy! Last week they sent me a version of the cover and it was great! I had a slight problem with the front cover depicting an extraordinarily cheesy alien holding an equally cheesy "raygun" and twisting a "Mary Ann" looking very attractive young lady's arm behind her back. Kind of reminiscent of the way Spinal Tap described the cover of Smell The Glove. Anyway, my problem was that it had nothing to do with the movie and so if someone bought it based on the movie they would be upset and not recommend it to their posse and or friends. They've agreed to have a go at including some stills of Buck Fiesta, The Red Arrow, and Dr. Spider Jones that I took last night. I hope they keep the lady though. She pretty
Also, RNRSP will include a short movie called
Hick Trek2
The Next Aggravation

I haven't seen it yet but it's evidently a Star Trek spoof about rednecks in outerspace. It sounds funny and I'm happy it will be included.
Finally, RNRSP is now on imdb.com so if you've seen the movie (and you enjoyed it) please post your review!

1/27/2006 All the materials for Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol were sent today to Troma. I am told June will be the release date. The bonus features could be described as excessive but I figure the more the merrier. Among lot's of other things, I've included a version of the movie in, "Castovision", that way you can see the cast giving their commentary at the bottom of the screen and still see the movie. Pretty amazing huh? I wish I could personally thank those aliens who crashed in Roswell thus allowing us to backwards engineer their technology to do these joyous things.

1/16/2006 I'm very pleased to announce that I and Super B Pictures have entered into a distribution deal with Troma Team, those same folks who have brought you such quality, family entertainment as the Toxic Avenger. As a result, I can no longer sell Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol as Troma now have that distinguished right. So, all I can say to you is that the Troma version of the movie will be slightly different than the original plus a 13 minute long Where Are They Now Featurette and an Outtakes feature.

11/03/2005 I've posted some more mp3s on the media page. The catalog of my albums is coming about including some thoughts and trivial factoids on my songs along with the songs themselves. In other news I'm pleased to say that I've sold out of DVDs and have reordered more which will be available in 3 days so you can still place your order now. What a great holiday idea!

10/9/2005 I just spent a great weekend at the Cinemerge film festival; learning and meeting a lot of dedicated and friendly people. Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol took home two awards; one for Best Sound and the other for Best Feature Film. Neato mosquito.

10/4/2005 Hey hey hey! We sold out today!
That's right the world premiere of Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol, Tuesday, October 4th, was sold out and they even had to turn people away. Not before at least one couple bought a DVD. Speaking of DVDs, I sold a bunch, all of the posters I had brought, and a number of iron-ons. The Turbo Jet was parked out front decked out with all it's gadgets. The cast was on hand minus 2 ninjas. All and all a very good night. Now that the movie has premiered I'll have DVDs on sale through this site. I've just got to figure out that pay pal thing again. I'm also going to start trolling around for a distributer who has enough guts to tell how it really is in space. Here's what the Moxie had to say.

Enjoy the Rock 'n' Roll Space Patrol movie trailers here.
3 songs from the movie are also available for download.
